QuantumScape and Murata Manufacturing Co. have entered into an agreement to explore collaboration for high-volume manufacturing of ceramic film for QuantumScape’s solid-state battery technology.
QSE-5 Solid-State Battery Cell: QuantumScape’s first planned commercial product, the QSE-5, is a ~5 amp-hour solid-state lithium-metal battery cell designed for automotive applications. It offers an energy density of 844 Wh/L and can fast charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 12 minutes.
Anodeless Architecture: QuantumScape's innovative anodeless design eliminates the traditional anode host material, allowing lithium metal to form in situ during charging. This approach enhances energy density, reduces manufacturing complexity, and improves battery safety.
Solid Ceramic Separator: The proprietary solid ceramic separator developed by QuantumScape replaces the flammable liquid electrolyte found in conventional batteries. This separator is nonflammable and noncombustible, significantly enhancing the safety profile of the battery.
Cobra Separator Production Process: Cobra is QuantumScape's next-generation heat treatment equipment for separator production. It enables scalable manufacturing of solid-state separators, facilitating the transition to gigawatt-hour scale production.
Raptor Separator Production Process: Raptor represents the first stage of QuantumScape’s fast separator production process. It was integrated into the company's baseline process in 2024 and is used in the production of low-volume QSE-5 B samples.
FlexFrame Cell Format: FlexFrame is QuantumScape's proprietary cell format that combines the advantages of prismatic and pouch cells. This design addresses the uniaxial expansion of lithium metal during charging and discharging, improving battery performance and longevity.
Alpha-2 Sample Cells: QuantumScape began shipping Alpha-2 sample cells to customers in early 2024. These cells served as precursors to the B samples, allowing for initial evaluation and testing by automotive partners.
Partnership with Volkswagen's PowerCo: QuantumScape has partnered with Volkswagen's battery company, PowerCo, to commercialize its solid-state battery technology. The agreement aims to bring the QSE-5 technology into mass production at gigawatt-hour scale.
Ceramics Collaboration with Murata: QuantumScape and Murata Manufacturing Co. have entered into a framework agreement to explore collaboration for high-volume manufacturing of ceramic film, a critical component in QuantumScape’s solid-state batteries.
Sustainable Design and Lifecycle Management: While lithium-metal batteries can play a crucial role in the fight against climate change, we are conscious of the potential negative environmental impacts in the battery lifecycle.
